Ok guys, I just want to say before you read this, II started writing this when I was a bit loopy on some sleeping pills and my inhibitions were kinda out the window so if I said anything you’re not use to me saying, it’s the loopy me talking not the level headed me. And also I am counting this towards last nights post, so post a day can still count because I’ll be posting another blog later on today.

Today, or rather tonight, from hidden fortress in the rural underground of my room I bring you an age old question that has probably been over asked and over done. I’m talking about open world games with the main story line being something you can do when you feel the need to get around to it.

Games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Red Dead Redemption all allow the player to explore the vast expanses of the worlds in which the in game characters live. Giving away the standard no choice mission style, developers seem to favor filling the world with vast landscapes of wide up mountain ranges and country. There are so many things I admire about the guys that do this formula, let alone do the formula well with no mix ups or left over glitches (Looking at you Bethesda). Despite just how much I respect the games that pull this off I always wonder one simple thing.

Why the hell can I never once “beat” the game? I have always played these games in a vain attempt to make it across the finish line and say ” Wow, I can’t believe for once I beat this thing!” I will admit to you, that Fallout 3 is one of the only games I have ever really beaten the main story line in these open world games but never once have I completed all the side quest. I mean, I know it’s possible to do but I have never sat down long enough to tackle them all. That isn’t the saddest thing, the saddest thing really is I have never once beat a main story line else where, not in Red Dead not in Oblivion but I seem to keep coming right back to it just to stop 2 hours later thinking “Shit, I really wish I had made some actual progress than being stuck trying to “level” while I could be better off down an already beaten path.”

I understand that doing something new and different is the way the world should be and that the path less traveled makes for a more enjoyable movement but I just can’t get into games like this. I can, at first, but every time I try to jump back in I just get slapped in the face by something more powerful than me, or in relating to Oblivion and Fallout, the game freezes and I realize that I hadn’t saved since 2 hours back and the last auto save was even farther. At that point I keep loading and loading and finally I just give up stating loud and proud that I am officially done with this game.

That is until 2 days later I’m going stir crazy because of the snow outside locking me in my room.

Maybe it’s just me, but to a degree open world games just bug the almighty living shit out of me. I like the idea of doing whatever the hell you want not being restricted by the main story line but when it comes down to it, I kinda like just the main story sometimes. The side quests aren’t bad, they just seem a minor distraction to me. Then again I also find some of the minor side quests more entertaining than the main quest so it’s a bit of conundrum for me.

All in all I guess what I’m asking is how much is too much freedom? If we downsized the game world would it be less of the game that we’ve come to know or am I just whining too much and not doing it right (amidoinitrite?).

Feel free to leave your comments and questions to me below, and tell me just what you think of these questions I threw at you guys.

Well it is that time of the year isn’t it? Super Bowl time and I’m not truly excited like normal. But what get’s me excited is just how amazing it is that gaming integrates, mainly because of EA’s Madden game.

See I’m not one for sports games, especially since I can’t play so well in real life why should I continue the constant shame in the digital world? Yet this yearly event that gives a new meaning to psychic predictions a new meaning has always had me intrigued, right down to the end of the actual game.

Annually, when the two teams are announced for the big game, EA gets down and dirty by simulating just how the two teams may just fair in its real life counterpart. So far, since 2004 there has only been one moment in which they got the winning team wrong, the scores may be off but the fact that we can be so close as to say “We know exactly who will win this year” seems like a win to some degree.

This year, the guys over at EA have simulated that Pittsburgh Steelers will beat Green Bay 24-20.

Though it’s not just the score that they give, the simulation also predicts the MVP and exactly when the game may turn around for either team, which has potential to being an interesting tool to use before the game itself, for those of you who like to bet or pretend to know what your talking about with your drunk uncles.

Below I’ll setup the running list of scores since 2004, now look closely to see that at least one score is barely off from the ones predicted:

Super Bowl XXXVIII
Madden: Patriots 23, Panthers 20
Actual Score: Patriots 32, Panthers 29

Super Bowl XXXIX
Madden: Patriots 47, Eagles 31
Actual score: Patriots 24, Eagles 21

Super Bowl XL
Madden: Steelers 24, Seahawks 19
Actual score: Steelers 21, Seahawks 10

Super Bowl XLI
Madden: Colts 38, Bears 27
Actual score: Colts 29, Bears 17

Super Bowl XLII — WHOOPS
Madden: Patriots 38, Giants 30
Actual score: Giants 17, Patriots 14

Super Bowl XLIII
Madden: Steelers 28, Cardinals 24
Actual score: Steelers 27, Cardinals 23

Super Bowl XLIV
Madden: Saints 35, Colts 31
Actual score: Saints 31, Colts 17

Now I know it doesn’t prove much but I have to say, this is an awesome amalgamation of gaming and prediction, it may be obvious to everyone and can crown me captain obvious but I just can’t help it. I get the excitement fits of a 5 year old on christmas when I see gaming used in such a interesting way.

I know you guys are probably all up in a tizzy about the fact that I may be saying that Green Bay sucks, but honestly if any of you have read my opening statements I don’t care about sports, and if GB wins more power to them. I just think watching a gaming simulation predict what could happen is more interesting than watching the actual game.

If you think the simulation is right or wrong, or if you just want to comment on my inadequacies as a man who can’t play sports, feel free to leave a comment below telling me just how you feel.

I know, I know, the images this title makes you think of are really bad and probably something you don’t wish to share on the internet. Not me of course because what on earth could possibly be so bad about the word limp? Now that I got all those images burning up inside your noggin, you sick pervs, I’d like to introduce you all to something very… let’s just say entertaining.

Say you’re an Olympic athlete, you’ve been hand-picked to run the hundred meter dash in the next games and your more than prepared for this amazing opportunity. Then imagine you falling flat on your face each time you try to take one step forward. You have that image in your heads? Good because that, in a nutshell, is what QWOP is all about.

I know you’re sitting there saying “QWOP? Isn’t that the name of some metal band no ones ever heard of?” And to correct you: Yes, yes it is but it is also an indie game developed way back in 08 which puts you in the seat of this runner who, for some unknown reason, isn’t built like the rest of us. Within the game you control said runner with the QW and OP buttons to alternate both thighs and calves in order to go forward or in most cases backwards doing a sweet kick just before you hit the ground. Looks kinda like a prototype for a FFX Blitzball simulator.

(Oh my god did he just make a Final Fantasy reference?!?!?)

In my 30 minutes of botched attempts, I finally found a formula that worked, simple by dragging one of my legs behind me I managed to get 53.1 Meters. It was hilarious to watch as I made my way down the track most likely scraping all muscle and cartilage off my leg as I made it to 50 where, as the descriptions warn, there is a surprise waiting. Me expecting a basket of cuddly puppies or maybe even a jetpack, possibly some bandages for my destroyed leg, I was unfairly greeted by a hurdle which then halted my dragging technique which then caused me to fall back on my ass.

Not to say this is a poorly made game but rather a insanely challenging on in which, if you were really dedicated you could make him look human but then where would the fun be in that?

If you want to give QWOP a try, just follow the link and drag your self down that track to hearts content and then tell me about it in the comments below or you could even tell me about all those bad thoughts you had in mind when you read the title to tonight’s blog. I don’t judge, well actually I do but I just like to give off false impressions.

As is the nature of the writer, we crave more and more exposure in the sense that at least one more person is reading our blogs/articles/stories/web journals than the day before. In an effort to possibly produce this effect, WordPress has started the initiatives of Post a Day and Post a Week 201 challenging members of the WP community to blog a little more often than they would. To show that if they can blog once a day/week for the whole year of 2011, that people might be more inclined to do it more in the years to come and maybe even branch out with how and what they blog about.

When I read about this initiative, I decided I’d go ahead and try my hand at it. At this moment in time I have indeed been publishing at least one (if not more) blog(s) per day so the challenge should be able to keep me pretty fit in what I am doing as a journalist, or as pre-journalist in any regards.

So as a prerequisite of this challenge, I am declaring here and now that I will be participating in their challenge of posting daily posts for the entire year of 2011 and I will do my best to entertain and please those that decide to swing by my humble page. In return I hope to gain a few more followers and maybe some people to give me some feedback on my works so I can begin to adjust myself in the ways I just can’t see.

Don’t let the title fool you, I’ve always been interested in the series M.VS.C. for years. I remember all the fun I had with the original arcade game with my brother when I was younger, and how it depended on the day, I could actually kick his butt with Spider-Man and Ken on my team. The idea of having two different fighters from two hugely different world on the same team always inspired ideas of mashing up other of my favorite games and shows together to kick some major butt. Not all ideas where as effective as other seeing as how the Hulk and Wolverine tag team it up is more interesting then having Niko Belic (GTA IV) and Master Chief kicking some alien ass. Though that’s my opinion, matching up universes should be left to the care of professionals.

To the point of my title, I will say I’m joining in on the journalistic bandwagon in the sense that I am actually going to report on the goings on of this game, for the moment that pertains to the behemoth of a character roster which seems to continually grow larger by the day. Insert your witty, hormone induced comment here and get ready for me to take a look at the current list of Marvel Vs. Capcom: The Fate of Two Worlds:

As you can see from the rag-tag team of characters below that when the companies decided to merge worlds, they were not taking any exceptions to who to bring along to the party. Amongst the fighting legends like Ryu (above), Capcom decided this go round they would let their other ass kickers from series outside Street Fighter and Mega Man to join the fray, with addition of such characters as Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine for the Resident Evil series, Trish and Dante from the DMC series, and even adding a bit of cultural flare and style by letting ole’ Amaterasu off her leash to come fight against the Super Heroes (and villians) of the Marvel universe.

Ryu (Street Fighter), Haggar (Final Fight), Arthur (Ghost n Goblins) line up ready to take on any on comers

Here is the current roster of characters at the moment, but knowing Capcom a new challenger will come forward moments before the release in mid February:

Capcom:

Akuma (Street Fighter)

Amaterasu (Okami)

Arthur (Ghosts N Goblins)

Chris Redfield (Resident Evil)

Chun- Li (Street Fighter)

Dante (Devil May Cry)

Felicia (Darkstalkers)

Haggar (Final Fight)

Jill Valentine (Resident Evil) A DLC character

Morrigan (Darkstalkers)

Ryu (Street Fighter)

Spencer (Bionic Commando)

Trish (Devil May Cry)

Tron Bonne (Mega Man Legends)

Viewtiful Joe (Viewtiful Joe)

C. Viper (Street Fighter)

Wesker (Resident Evil)

Zero (Mega Man X)

Marvel:

Captain America

Deadpool

Doctor Doom

Dormammu

Hulk

Iron Man

Magneto

M.O.D.O.K.

Phoenix

She-Hulk

Shuma-Gorath (DLC Character)

Spider-Man

Storm

Super-Skrull

Taskmaster

Thor

Wolverine

X-23
That is the list as of this moment, with the two updates I found this morning of Akuma and Taskmaster that boils the roster down to 36 playable characters in all. So you can definitely imagine all the possible combinations at your disposal. I’m personally exciting about all the out of character fighters in this game and can’t wait to give Arthur and Viewtiful Joe a try along with testing out some of the more powerful super heroes moves.

Why don’t you tell me what character your most excited about? Or if you feel this style of fighter has been over played let me hear that too, just shoot me a comment in the boxes below.

Well my faithful gaming friends, today I stumbled upon a few articles which piqued my curiosity (and even my anger) which I felt it would be a shame not to try and spread a little further around the net.

One of the articles of note just happens to be something I hadn’t heard anything about till this moment, that being the now leaked PSP Phone.

I truly had not heard any news regarding any such product to be in development let alone be in the phases of production to be “leaked”. I was scanning through random articles, to try to stay as up to date as possible on any and all news that comes out when I stumbled upon. Before I decided to write about it, I did some more digging, or at least look for the videos in which the Chinese Website IT168 displayed which circulated around the internet all the way back here. In my search I found out that it had been leaked one time before in the earlier stages of development later in the year last year or so the dates dictated.

I was shocked, one at myself for letting the mere mention of this information pass me by, and at the company Sony (developing under the name of Sony Ericson) has let the product leak out for the second time. The idea behind it sounds, honestly, awesome. One part phone, one part handheld gaming machine. I always loved the PSP, I haven’t had one in while but back when I had it, it was the ruler of the hand helds in my life. The idea of having a phone on my PSP back in the day (like it was that long ago) would have been fantastic for me.

One of the few images of what promises to be an amazing tool

Amongst the details and schematics for the phone, (which if it hasn’t been been given a release date or even a finish date how are their final specifications even out there?) they discuss about the “app” in which the games will be played was brought up, Playstation Pocket. During the normal run, the phone is in, of course, phone mode but with one click of Playstation Pocket app and your transmitted to the familiar PSP esque menu where you can activate your games, which is under speculation how they will be brought about. With this info being leaked, beside what specifics that were made on the hardware capabilities, there was no information what-so-ever on how or on what software Playstation Pocket will be running. No PS One game info, now downloadable game mentions, no future releases. Nothing besides the name, the pictures, and the video of a racing game in which it seems motion control was possible for steering.

What seems to me as a big hole in Sony Ericson’s intel circle is letting the entire net know just what we can look forward to but with the exception to information that seems rather important to a few potential buyers. I’d complain about marketing but that would make me look rather foolish in this case wouldn’t it?

In other news, a battle of ethics was found on a discussion board which just made me want to stand up and smack the man who started it all. I use the term discussion board very loosely due to the fact that 9/10 of the time you could barely understand what people were saying. Remember my article on editing and spell check? Yeah some people just don’t think about doing it before posting. I wont discuss too much about it but the debate was about the value of video games as “fake” enjoyment and how achievements weren’t achievements because they are so easy most people can do them easily. The one who started the fuss? Ironically, a man who wants to become a game designer.

His feelings about the state of gaming seem, if not hard to understand, to show he is picking a bad career choice. That or he believes that he can change the gaming mindsets. Either way this spurred an interesting debate on gaming ethics and if gaming is bad vs good. Major consensus?

A general matter of opinion statements, and in all respects I agree with that. I love games as a media/art outlet and it serves as an amazing way for people to tell stories of action, adventure, romance, and even war and allow gamers to experience it through their vision but allow the gamers their own free flow interpretation throughout the game world. It serves as a stress relieving hobby (sometimes stress inducing) and a great way to sit down a interact with a story or with a group of friends.

His reaction, he was still set in his ways. Below I’ll post his post that started it all, or some of it, then a link to the site so you can read some of the interesting (and misspelled) opinions of others.

“I love games, playing them and i do focus on becoming a game designer but i start to think thats just ethically wrong.

Games are made for money and how companies sell them? by making them “fun”(and of course correct marketing to create an impression to the masses that they will like so they are gonna buy it). But what is fun exactly?

For the majorities and the bigger percent of the market its simply “winning”…

People do feel better(and feel better about themselves) by “winning” or believing they “achieved” something or they simply have the power to choose or do something that they cannot in real life. Some games even behind the scenes lower the game difficulty so they wont disappoint you…

Games are simply becoming psychology buffs and not games that can sometimes also have some challenges that can count as achievements that require skill to be earned.

I dont say there arent people who like

Story

design

competition(it requires actual skill)

Social and be together with friends

But these are just a minority compared to most people who just “pay” games and never really come online to the internet

Whats the difference between games and drugs for the masses?

Both do some physical and sometimes mental damage

Both spend time Both require MONEY

Both waste some time

Both make you feel better even though you might not deserve it or have done nothing to earn it. You just pay money for it… Its just like tricking kids with candy…

Do you think its correct to fool people to give their money just to give them a think that makes them feel they suck less??even though they still suck a lot and “winning” the game doesnt make you suck less”

If any of you guys can make sense of that, please let me know. I understood what he meant, at times, but there are moments that he just gave me such a headache. Check out the site MMORPG for the rest of his post and the ensuing reactions.

And if you want to, post below of this post and let me hear what you think about these topics, ethics or PSP phone. Even if you have another subject you want to break me at, just post a comment and I’ll respond in kind.

I am generally not the one person to follow the trend when it comes to releasing my blogs. I would suppose that in that sense I’m an anti conformist blogger, which would then make me a conformist because many other don’t do what I don’t do. It’s a complicated circle but I generally do that.

In this case, however, I decided I would continue the age old trend of celebrating (or demoralizing) the releases shooting out this year. It seemed like a perfect time and there are quite a few I am more than utterly giddy about:

First up: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The Prequel to two of the greatest games in history of choose your own adventure type games. 25 years before the events in Deus Ex, when biomechanical augments are all the rage for humans and the nanotech augments that were popular in both the first two games haven’t been designed yet. Taking the helm of Adam Jensen, the player will roam through five cities, including Shanghai and Detroit while tracking down clues in which to solve a conspiracy, which is always the main plot point to every DE game.

You can expect to find many mysteries, thousands of choices, cool upgrades and weapons coming down the line in this installment. The Development and Publishing assignments switching up, Edios will be developing while Square Enix will be publishing it.

The release date is scheduled for early 2011 and I know I wont be able to get my hands on the game when it comes out but I know I will be picking it up on the Xbox 360 and expect many sleepless nights when it comes down to playing it.

Next up something I not truly excited about but know that many others are just clamoring to get their clammy little hands on a copy. Epic Games child from the loins of Cliffy B himself, Gears of War 3 will be released late 2011, at this moment November 25 2011.

Gamers will once again take control of one B.A.M.F. Marcus Fenix in a new section of his messed up world of Sera. It takes place 18 months after the end of Gears 2 and now the world is slowly becoming more threatening as some parts of the Locust are evolve into a terrorize force that threatens both sides of the war front.

This time around, Epic has decided to allow females to join the party in the form of 3 female playable characters, Samantha Byrne, Anya Stroud, and Bernadette Mataki. They are also tossing in all new weapons to the party, to you know, liven things up in the heat of battle. Including incendiary grenades, a double barrel shotgun, and even a weapon that can take down an enemy in one hit, dubbed the One Shot.

With four player co-op campaign, the multiplayer many people loved from the second game this game will probably be an amazing end, if it is a trilogy, and I know fans will enjoy for another few years to come. Oh yeah and Carmine is not dying.

Third up to bat, another series I’ve been only half invested in due to inability to grab a good copy. The Elder Scrolls series sees it fans into a brave new venture in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim where both the developer Bethesda and the player take on their greatest challenges.

The most amazing looking Elder Scrolls game could be one of Bethesda's Greatest challenge

I read the thorough article in this months Game Informer and was very impressed by what I saw coming from the developers who brought the Fallout series as well as Elder Scrolls series. Past outings in their games have been… well compared to gaming standards these days a bit under par but still great games none the less. This time around, both the graphics and the premise are upon epic scales seeking to break every boundary they ever placed before them throughout the years. I do hope there is a reduction in the amount of glitches in which we have seen in the past games, because I sadly had to end my recent playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas due to glitches that would not let me proceed, I was more than annoyed with the game so I returned it. So here’s hoping.

This time around we finally push forward through the prophecies of the Elder Scrolls and past the events we have been so delicately dancing around for year and years on end. This time, it’s the rule of dragons coming to light and only certain people can come forward to defend the world from an oppressive and destructive rule of the vile dragons.

They have added in new battle features such a dual wielding both weapons and magic, upgrading the way the player levels up in terms of perks, skills, and what we focus on instead of clumping the gamer into one particular group or another. They even went so far as to design a whole new “effect” program in terms of in whatever you do in one small town will have grandiose consequences. Say you drop your sword in the streets of an old town instead of selling it at the shop, in some cases it could just lye there throughout the seasons becoming rusty and broken, or in other events a boy could come running up to you with it ask if you dropped it and would want it back. In a third account, two men could come across the sword at the same time and proceed to fight and possibly kill each other over it. Which is my oh so favorite of scenarios in my opinion. Pretty much every little thing you do is recorded and used against you all over the world, which is the way video games SHOULD treat their worlds.

In every regard, Skyrim sounds like an amazing premise and hold great potential. Here is hoping that the guys over at Bethesda keep up the progress and continue to surprise us upon release day in November.

This year looks promising and I know I didn’t put but three of the recent releases but current work loads makes me lack the time to write up any more but I will post below a list of the games I’m most excited about this year.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Max Payne 3 (supposedly)

Star Wars Old Republic

Portal 2

Bulletstorm

Marvel vs. Capcom 3

Dead Space 2

Mass Effect 3

Infamous 2

I was perusing the news this morning, searching for my daily fill of gaming knowledge and as it had produced quite a few interesting tidbits to write about in my earlier blog, but it also spurred an idea for another blog later.

I saw a trend amongst the bloggers which made me a bit sad, it even made me look inward towards my own writing.

It was improper writing, terrible grammar, or just the misplacing of words. It wouldn’t have been such a big concern if it didn’t continue to occur in almost every blog I read. If I’m not mistaken, isn’t online journalism a form of PROPER journalism? I would hope, at this moment, no it isn’t, because if it is being watched closely as true journalism is then we look way to out of form. I hate saying that we shouldn’t be taken seriously but honestly we couldn’t be even if we wanted to be due to all these simply overlooked errors.

In simple terms we are an out of shape solider in the military and is being considered again for our next enlistment. The end result? We fail, in so many epic ways. All because we didn’t lose that last 5 pounds, which we could easily drop if we took the time to try.

Anyone tired of the analogy? I kind of am, but it was my analogy so to a degree I love it and to another degree hate it. All I’m saying people is without proper editing, a once over read of your own article we will be stuck in the same low status as we are right now. Doing this could prevent the simple mistake of saying have instead of properly saying had. If more writers took that extra minute to actually look over their works, we wouldn’t look so.. so improper compared to the other journalists.

Those of us that use this principal, shouldn’t have to be the people who graduated college and have their accreditation in journalism. I really think that we shouldn’t be looked at like the less intellectual twin in the family. I honestly think that we need to step up our game, myself included, so someday online journalism wont just be some big joke to the licensed journalists.

First I want to start of saying: As of today I have tried one of those little Mana energy shots that are sold at certain shops (mostly know by me at the Mall). I looked it up and apparently they were made for gamer who play WoW constantly. No idea if this has any validity but I would sure look into after this post.

The energy shot for all RPG or MMO gamers in the world

My opinion? It tasted a bit… rough going down, kinda like your first shot of Jack Daniels in your life minus the alcohol burn. Well actually I kinda felt that burn there, after I drank it when the after taste hit me. It gave a bit of an energy jump, oddly enough, but my expectations are low for how long it will last. I just hope this nauseating after taste goes away. If you’re wondering why I even picked it up, well it was on sale at my local Sam Goody’s Going Out Of Business sale, for all of one dollar. Always wondered what it was like, saw it and saw the sale percentage on it and was like “Why not?”.

Onto to other fronts of Nerdism, I have been skimming through recently posted articles on N4G.com and found a few interesting bits of news that I just thought I might want to share to those who check me out here.

First up: Dreamcast fans of yester-year rejoice in the fact that Sega is finally sending some love your way. The Dreamcast was considered both a raving flop and something far beyond it’s time by many a gamer throughout the years following it’s release. Being the first console with online capabilities and online type games, it was in all fairness the predecessor of Xbox/Xbox 360 and Xbox Live as well as PS2/PS3 and PSN. I remember picking up this console when I was younger, 10 or 11 years old, and was very impressed by what it had to offer and what it promised, especially with online play. Just the idea that playing with people across the Globe made me as giddy as a school girl and anytime I saw any more games being announced to have that feature I continued to imagine the possibilities. Now Sega has decided to bring us a new game for the PC and the Xbox 360 titled The Dreamcast Collection.

You Remember these classics don't you?

The Collection features four of the more popular games released for the Dreamcast: Crazy Taxi, Sega Bass Fishing, Space Channel 5 Part 2, and my personal favorite Sonic Adventure. With this collection of top games (myself questioning that statement on Bass Fishing) being released, the true Dreamcast fans have something to feel better about their early retired console friend.

Last bit of information I just found absolutely awesome in terms of innovation. You guys like the PS3 right? Well apparently so did the United States Air Force (ASAF) which is why they went and turned 1,700 of the PS3′s processors and built a powerful Supercomputer from them. It is said it’s being used by the Department of Defense under the name of Condor Cluster. It can calculate up to 500 operations per second, uses 1/10 of the energy used by other Supercomputers used by US officials, which makes it a “green” Supercomputer. They hope to use it for a variety of different uses to help the Service, including possible artificial intelligence research. If all that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will. I personally think that if the USAF can take current video game console power and merge it upon itself 1,700 times to create a powerful computer, why can’t the consoles one day do that for gamers, not 1,700 times but maybe 2 or 3, giving us super powerful consoles capable of such grand things? As well as the Nation’s tech improving as well, who can complain about possible better defense and prevention? I know I can’t.

PS3 processors under AF use

You can read more on the PS3 Supercomputer at electronictheatre for a few more bits of information on what they plan to do with this new tech and about how it got started.

What used to be a monolithic beast on the NES has changed drastically when it comes down to the PS3, Xbox 360, and even the PS2. The way things are done these days shows that game developers have made great strides from their predecessors and crafted the games we love to play today.

I write this now as I pull myself away from the most recent issues of Game Informer, reading a rather saddening article on how the “gaming” populace seems to have changed. I will admit I feel very sad about hearing that even one person starting to believe that being a gamer isn’t saying much about a person anymore. That’s another blog and discussion for another day though.

Within the past 3 months, the gaming world has been booming with cheers and jeers about Microsofts new love child, Kinect. Within 10 days of its release, over 1 million of the sensor units were sold and has been called “top-selling accessory item in terms of dollar sales on a year-to-date basis”. High praise must account for something right?

I can’t give you a fair answer for that, not just yet anyway but I can say that having tried it for a very small amount of time in a Gamestop store, it’s not too bad. That being said, I have to tell you I didn’t see much that the Wii and possibly the PS3′s Move hadn’t done. Well, of course minus the remote free feature, which is a step in the right direction in my mind. It was avatar based games mostly, Kinect Sports, just like Wii Sports, even though they had other titles offered up (Harry Potter game anyone?) it was and has been limited. It has been boasted to take gaming to the next level in the future, Forza Motor Sports 4 and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, that do sound like they could step out of the Wii’s comfort zones and showcase what remote free play can do.

My current impression is technically a Feh (on a scale of 1 to 10 it’s like 4-5) only because it feels more like Microsoft is rehashing the past with current audiences. With the announcements of microphone use and facial recognition being used with the avatars and the hands/voice commanded Xbox menus, it gives me hope and ideas for the future of fully immersive gaming experience. It doesn’t raise the impression level to me, it’s cool but not so much that I’m overly impressed.

What does get me excited is the limitless possibilities that Microsoft has set before themselves. The idea that this game peripheral will allow your avatar to transmit your actions into it’s form has something much bigger, much greater sitting at it’s doorstep. Character customization to the next and possibly ultimate level. Imagine Mass Effect 3 comes out and is Kinect supportive, say you want to start from scratch one play through, the character customization menu unfolds on the screen with some many editing options you don’t know what to cho0se. You want the player to be you, you want to be Commander Shepard. Take the Kinect sensor and activate the camera, allow it analyze your entire features, high or low cheekbones, big or small nostrils, hazel or blue eyes. Right down to the smallest detail, let it scan you so you pull yourself into the game. I’d also say let it use your voice for Shepard’s but then voice actors would be out of a job and that epic line of yours might not come out so amazingly. Though you could use it as a calling card in multiplayer gamer, you kill a person and your prerecorded “Yeehaw!” or “Taste the defeat, punk!” plays as you move past his corpse.

Speaking of immersion, the ability to follow facial features could be used to fully immerse any gamer just by simply following their physical reactions to requests or words said in game. Say you have a choice between killing millions of innocent aliens or destroying the person and his team that asked you to do so. Your initial reaction, for bloggers sake, is shock and anger, your character mirrors that gasp, glare and growl just before your options come up, or even then allow the players verbal response take instant action, the voice actor still plays everything out but it pulls more into a seamless story experience. Even so much as lifting your gun to their head or raising your arms in a offended fashion. The possibilities are endless, as I have stated many times over.

Of course these all have their downsides, but what things in life don’t? Stating that game designers would have to reinvent their codes, the way they work and how they program things to suit all these fancy ideas. Well I know that, trust me the thought has arisen to me, but the bigger question is those game companies that are out their looking for just making amazing and fun products, why would they not want to at least try?

I will say that I’ve seen some hacks done that included Modern Warfare gun play, and what I can tell you from that, based on what tech is there, it would need some serious upgrading to make it flow better. It does have the ability, completely has the ability to pull out the more interesting side of certain games, even placing us one step close to so called “virtual reality”.

The world sure has changed since I first started gaming, some things for the bad some for the good. Right now all I can hang onto is that the ideas are out there to be used, not just from me but from many others, to put this “new” tech to spectacular uses. Here’s hope for the future of gaming and for the future or Gamers.
